Pappy is visiting us! One night we had some excitement as Karen spotted a large wild boar munching on her garden flowers. Pappy was in the middle of cooking dinner, and rushed outside wielding a Sri Lankan curved knife to scare the beast out of the garden and down the street.
In the news today I read that NASA's Voyager 2 probe has entered interstellar space, the region past the push of the solar wind (although not solar gravity). I was fortunate to work at JPL in 1991 and to spend time at the 70m radio antenna at Deep Space Station 14 (also known as Mars Station), far out in the Mojave Desert, writing software that did Fast Fourier Transforms on the signal coming back from Voyager 2. I have seen this giant telescope turn to watch her rise, lock on to her signal as it emerged from the background noise, and listen to her data song. The home page photo on this website was taken at that time. Cruise on, Voyager 2!
