Karen's two week school holiday gives us the chance to visit Nepal to see friends and do some trekking with her colleague Silvija. We arrive on a sunny afternoon in Kathmandu and are met by Thomas and Bruno who cart us away to their home in Patan. Bruno gives us ceremonial red chalk smudges on our foreheads and we share a sneaky beer in the back of their jeep-like Gypsy truck as Thomas drives through the muddy streets of traffic.
In the evening we visit Durbar Square for bites and Nepali "raksi" hooch and give the prayer wheels a spin at the reconstructed temples that were decimated by the big earthquake four years ago. Some buildings are still held up by wooden supports.
