Our own John "Pappy" Schwabacher is aboard sailboat Istria somewhere in the midst of a thicket of sailing vessels participating in the annual ARC rally. They have just left Las Palmas on Gran Canaria (in the Canary Islands of Spain). It will be a three week passage across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea.
The ARC ("Atlantic Rally for Cruisers") is a flotilla of single- and multi-hulls that start out just after hurricane season. Some are racing to be first across, but most are just making the trip together for greater safety and the joy of companionship.
This is Pappy's second attempt at the rally: last time Istria was forced to turn back after just two days because of mechanical troubles. Let's hope they have better luck this year! You can follow Istria and the rest of the rally on the ARC Fleet Viewer page.
